I HAD a similar experience to Helen Thorne, a patient in York Hospital (Bed Crisis at York Hospital, March 4).
On the second night of my two-night stay in York Hospital, I was woken up at half-past midnight in a most apologetic and sympathetic manner by a night nurse to be told that my bed was required for an emergency.
I was taken in a wheelchair with my belongings to the extended stay unit, where I spent the rest of the night on a trolley.
During my short stay, it became clear that the hospital was under great pressure. But at the age of 72, I have nothing but admiration for the front-line staff – doctors, nurses, students and cleaners. Almost without exception, they were caring and cheerful. In my view, a credit to the National Health Service.
