THE redevelopment of the former British Sugar site is the biggest development in Acomb for many years, and it’s essential the plans are right.
The site, including the old Manor School, is one of York’s largest brownfield sites, and while I support the principle of using this land for much-needed housing, some issues still need addressing.
As the plans stand, the mound behind Langholme Drive will be removed. It is essential the mound is retained. The removal would mean the back gardens of Langholme Drive properties would back directly onto the back gardens of the new properties, resulting in lost privacy.
The mound is also a well established nature habitat, home to a diverse range of wildlife. If the mound is removed it will mean loss of habitat that cannot be replaced simply by planting new trees within the development, which is what is proposed.
It appears the majority of financial contributions, known as Section 106 contributions, could be spent on facilities outside Acomb.
More money should be earmarked for spending on facilities within Acomb, where the development has the most impact.
