IN THE Press of January 21, Philip Roe asks what has happened to our police. I can tell him what has happened to some of them – they are resting in what is supposed to be Acomb Police Station.

On the night January 13, I called at the station to report a road traffic accident. There were plenty of police vehicles at the front, plenty of private cars at the back and plenty of lights on in the building.

After knocking on the door several times without getting a reply, I tried to use the phone at the side of the door. Inside there is a hand-set but no instructions. When you pick this up and listen you get a dialling tone; after a while you are cut off and eventually I gave this up as a bad job.

I then walked to the rear of the building where I met a woman police constable out for a bit of fresh air. On telling her what I was there for, she said: “We don’t deal with that here but you can use the phone next to the door or ring 101 from your home number”. By this time I was very cold so I decided to go home and ring from there.

When I eventually got through to 101 I was informed that “as there were no injuries they were not interested”.
