RECENTLY, at around 10pm, I drove from the Lord Mayor’s Walk traffic lights, turning left into Gillygate.
Looking down the street, I noticed that the lights at Bootham Bar were on green. No other traffic was behind me and thinking that the lights were bound to change, I proceeded steadily along Gillygate. They stayed on green and as I went through them, they decided to change to back to red.
There must have been a dozen cars queueing in Bootham, seemingly all having to wait for me.
Further on, on my way back home on the A19, I encountered the Rawcliffe Park & Ride traffic lights, which for some reason we’re at red. The P&R was in darkness, the gates closed, and mine the only vehicle around.
The lights seemed to take ages to change. I have driven through these lights many times since, during the day (when no buses were around or cars turning right into the P&R), and at night, and they have always been at red for the main road. Why should this be?
