THERE has been widespread condemnation by some correspondents of proposals to reduce the frequency of bin collections in York.

Some have castigated individual councillors for what they perceive to be a decision that has already been made.

The proposals are part of a detailed response by various council departments to the Rewiring Public Services initiative which the council’s cabinet launched for consultation last June.

So far as waste collection goes, the present proposals have been made by officers, and will be considered by councillors at a future date. That was seemingly to be the next cabinet meeting on December 16.

The agenda for that meeting is on the council website, and there seems not to be a mention of this matter. The only “rewiring” topic for consideration is related to adult social care and place based services.

So presumably we will have to wait until the January cabinet, when Daffydd Williams will no doubt be chairing a democratic debate on bin collections.

Meantime it will be helpful if your more lively correspondents will kindly refrain from councillor bashing until our elected representatives have actually made their decision, which could be to bin the whole concept.
