I WOULD agree that the York ring road should be upgraded to a dual carriageway (The Press, November 15), but have not heard or seen any comment about the roundabouts.

If the junctions stay as they are, the situation will not improve one bit.

Any scheme must ensure that all the present roundabouts are replaced with motorway-type junctions as is the case on the A64 south of the city.

Even here problems arise where the road meets the A1237 at a roundabout and despite loads of money and time being spent it is often at a standstill in both directions.

The best example of how removing roundabouts helps is the A1 between Doncaster and Peterborough, which was a nightmare for years because of queuing at the many roundabouts.

They were all replaced a few years ago and the traffic now flows along the dual carriageway without all the hold-ups at the junctions.

No less is required on the northern bypass or any money spent will be wasted.
