I WISH to tell of a heart-warming experience. I occasionally lunch with a friend who uses a wheelchair. Last week the two of us celebrated her 40th birthday at the Cedar Court Grand Hotel.

We’ve experienced a range of service in York in the past. My friend laughs off the worst experiences (one restaurant insisted the scooter be parked in the disabled loo, then blocked off access to it by placing a table and customers in front).

Not so the Cedar Court. I phoned in advance and spoke to the concierge. Their entrance lift was under repair so they were using ramps. Normally, helping my friend from the car into her chair can be awkward and uncomfortable.

I was invited to stop at the front door. There, three men, including the concierge, took over. One took my key to park the car. The others reassembled the wheelchair from the boot, and helped lift my friend into her chair.

The concierge was ahead of us with all the practicalities of the visit, access to loos included. All staff were kind, helpful and sensitive. My friend had a view of the Minster as she enjoyed her delicious lunch and the waitress took photographs for us.

We have those to remind us of a special celebration, but mostly that care and kindness abound, even beyond the high standards of training.
