LOCAL Lib-Dem Nick Love has a short memory on the issue of proportionality (Letters, October 11) .
This from the party that in 2003 carved up chairmanships of committees to be solely held by one party, the Liberal Democrats, because it had the numbers to vote them through.
In contrast, although Labour could have done exactly the same in May 2011, it didn’t, and chairs of committees were allocated to other parties.
And if Mr Love is so keen to see more constructive cross-party working, he might want to suggest to his party colleagues and indeed members of all opposition parties, that a secret backroom deal away from the eyes of the public to allocate all chairmanships to the smaller parties represented on the council isn’t the best way to achieve it, nor is it democratically representative.
I would add that the ‘bias’ Mr Love speaks of on committees is set down in national legislation, and the council cannot operate legally without correctly proportional committees.
Cllr David Horton (Labour), Top Lane, Copmanthorpe, York.
