LET’S hope and pray there are no more tragedies in York’s rivers.

I have mixed feelings about the value of the proposed rescue boat as this could lull people into a further false sense of security, as these incidents can be over and done with very quickly.

Although 50 per cent of drownings involve alcohol, more education is required about the river being dangerous at all times and under any circumstances.

For instance, people – including strong swimmers – need reminding that when fully-clothed, their weight can almost double in water. Indeed, trousers can be dragged to the ankles, impairing leg movement and possibly becoming entangled in underwater obstacles.

People should be aware that the slightest intake of water into the windpipe, which can easily occur with a sharp intake of breath due to the cold water temperature, into the windpipe can result in a laryngospasm, where the windpipe closes to protect the lungs, resulting in unconsciousness, known as “dry drowning”.

Even if someone is saved and revived, oxygen starvation can result in permanent damage to all major organs, including the brain.

Strong currents, freezing cold water, nil visibility... just because you can swim, don’t think you’re safe. You’re not!

Please just stay away, drunk or sober.
