IT WAS mystifying that Labour councillors could not support the Lib-Dem proposal at last Thursday’s council meeting to guarantee that Yearsley Pool would not be closed for the next five years.
Shortly after we came to power in 2003, emergency work had to be undertaken at Yearsley when bolts from the roof fell into the pool.
This work was followed by a major refurbishment of the pool complex, including the installation of facilities for people with disabilities (yes, it is amazing that Yearsley did not have these amenities before then).
The current council administration followed this up with the installation of a new boiler.
What a waste it would be to lose a facility used by a wide range of people after all this investment.
It is not possible to promise that Yearsley can be maintained forever, but Labour says that there will be a review of Yearsley in 2016; so all our proposal was asking for was a guarantee of the pool’s future for a further two to three years.
Cllr Keith Orrell, Lib Dem Councillor, Huntington and New Earswick ward.
