PAMELA Frankland’s wonderfully explicit letter highlighted the dreadful state of the food industry (Letters, September 15).

The only thing I would disagree with is her final statement: it should be those who have to deal with the present state of this vital matter who should be considered, not the food itself.

My blood boiled when I considered the dairymen and farmers who are suffering thanks to the supermarkets – have they never heard of live and let live?

They know how to hit below the belt and do so without hesitation.

How many dairies and farmers have been brought to their knees over the past few years are beyond count.

How many unfortunate cattle have had to meet an early slaughter while their owners get no consideration?

I really cannot see any way in which the people who produce our food can receive the help they need in order to survive.

Supermarkets have the strength to cut prices of food production to the minimum, and they seem to do so without hesitation.

What a sorry state is our once thriving and well-run food industry and what on earth can anybody do about it?
