High price of rail

High price of rail

First published in Letters

I ALREADY have to pay the considerable sum of £15,000 for a season ticket from York to London. I am now informed I must find more money to meet the average rail fare rise of 3.5 per cent.

I wonder how many passengers on our overcrowded trains are from the myriad of rail employees travelling unrestricted, free on “perks”, and what effect that has on prices and seat availability for the rest of us?

Mr V. King, Nether Poppleton, York.

You're taking aim at the wrong target Mr King.

There's a continuing jobs massacre on the railways, and fewer rail employees than ever get the "perks" to which you're alluding.

It's government policy to force fares up above and beyond the rate of inflation and certainly much faster than the rate of pay rises.

In most instances this is to boost the profits of highly-subsidised private companies.

In the case of the East Coast, it's to make it even more attractive to the profit-hungry privateers who are waiting impatiently to get their greedy paws on it. It's made a net contribution of around £1billion to the exchequer in the last five years, money they think should be lining their pockets instead of being reinvested.

Presumably you have a very well paid job for you to justify paying that amount of money to travel to work, & your dig at rail employees travelling on as you put it 'perks', I hardly think they contribute much to overcrowding & the cost of rail travel.

If they can run a rail network on the continent with

Cleaner trains
Seats available
On time
Cheaper.

Why not here.

It's a wind up anth!, surely nobody pays £15grand a year to travel by train, do they?, do you think he has his own carriage? Then he has the brass neck to talk about rail employees on 'perks', bet some of them don't even earn £15grand, what a plonker.

Zetkin is spot on. Bring back British Rail (modernised)! Abolish TOCs and ROSCOs. Anybody who doesn't know: look them up!
