IN response to J Metcalfe (Letters, July 23), as ward councillor and local resident I am well aware of pollution and congestion problems in Fulford Road.

Too many vehicles are travelling into York and Fishergate junction gives priority to traffic already on the inner ring road. It is true however that “tweaking traffic light sequences” could help – I have been pressing for a long time for vehicle sensors at Broadway junction to be repaired – in February I was told that there was no budget to fix them.

As a result, traffic from the University and Danesmead has to wait some 90 seconds, even when there is little or no traffic approaching on the main road.

Pedestrians become impatient and take chances rather than wait for the lights. Delays at Hospital Fields could be cut if the bike path and traffic from the industrial estate were on the same phase, as now happens at Broadway.

Afternoon and evening outbound congestion is caused by school/university traffic joining the flow, together with parking both sides of Fulford Main Street, resulting in buses and HGVs having to wait to pass each other in opposite directions.

However that’s in Fulford ward, with a Lib Dem councillor!
