No casinos in city

York Press: No casinos in city No casinos in city

QUESTION time. Like many people I am intrigued as to why there are no gambling casinos in York.

The demand must be absolutely huge. Every Tuesday there is a disappearance of people travelling to Leeds, Bradford, also Manchester to have their perfectly legal spin of the wheel.

York has no shortage of other licensed establishments, from betting shops to sex shops. Want a flutter on the gee-gees? Not far to go.

Councils come and councils go, fascinating to know, historically, obviously not a prayer of a casino for York. Can we thank (or blame) the Church influence?

Comments welcomed from the informed on the subject.

People getting further into debt with payday loans. We get bombarded with bingo and gambling adverts on TV.A lot of people gamble thinking they are going to make a fortune and end up in debt.So the answer is NO to casinos in York.

Hello Chissy,

Thank you for telling us mere mortals what we should think and how we should act. As you know, we lack the ability to think and critically and independently and I can now stop wasting time looking for my moral compass.

I’ve never been to a casino, however I do like a bet? Should I now stop in case I can no longer control my emotions and descend into a spiral of gambling depravity? Or, can I continue with wagering £3 a week? Should I stop doing the lottery??

Whilst I'm here and as you’re our expert, I’ve a couple of other questions which I hope you can answer??

Shepherd’s Pie or Cottage pie? Which is best?
I don’t like Chicken crisps, Mrs Mutt does. Do we have any future together?
I’m not sure about Ant and Dec? What do you think?

Regards,

Mutt

So i take it that you are in favor of gambling and what it can do to family's. As regards telling mere mortals how to think and act,you must be very naive.Look at the state of some people they need to be shown and told every thing,a lot is common sense.Regarding Cottage Pie vs Shepherds Pie,personally i like both. Now a question for you,how can you tell the difference between each pie, other than the obvious one.

Hello Chissy,

Am I in favour of gambling? I’m in favour of individuals being allowed to make their own informed choice? Why shouldn’t Mrs Mutt be allowed to go to bingo once a week or why I should I deny myself a day at the races now and again? Should I tell my work colleagues to disband the lottery syndicate as we’re clearly on a slippery slope? Sorry that you find such distaste in allowing the nation such horrible freedom?! ?!?!

What gambling can do to families? Grandad Mutt gambled every week, didn’t seem to do him any harm? He also liked a pint and the occasional cig?? Is this ok? Can you let me know?

“Look at the state of some people”. Who are you referring to? Some people? A certain demographic of the population perhaps? Please enlighten me?

Mrs Mutt states Shepherd’s Pie has a carrot? Is she right? She's also been known to put peas in? Can she be trusted?

Any opinion on the chicken crisps dilemma?

Regards,

Mutt

"Every Tuesday there is a disappearance of people travelling to Leeds, Bradford, also Manchester to have their perfectly legal spin of the wheel."

Can't honestly say I'd noticed an exodus of casino-goers every Tuesday (or any other day of the week for that matter).

The government doled out licences for so-called super-casinos a few years ago, but York wasn't on the list. However, I don't know if anyone applied for one for here.

Whether or not there ever is a casino in York is a matter of indiffrenece to me, as long as it's nowhere near Harry Towers - as far as I can see they're little more than over-priced late-night drinking dens, and I get woken up often enough by drunken students without sozzled gamblers adding to my heavy-lidded woe.

It does seem odd that a City that has so many tourists has no casino
I am not a gambler but am in favour of people being able to make their own choices as to what they do with their money either responsibly or otherwise as its theirs to spend as they wish.
I am not sure if there is a political/religious etc reason behind the fact there is not one in York or just no demand for one.
Perhaps someone knows the answer but I think people should be free to decide whether to gamble or not and its not for anyone else to stop them or prevent them having the opportunity as most people are relatively sensible and can be trusted and those who cannot will just get into difficulty in someway or another anyway

There are plenty of bookmakers on York, so cannot see why a casino is such a big problem?

Licensing is obviously the barrier, and that would be down to the council.

As with many things that the council decide upon, there is often much inconsistency and much hypocrisy.

No doubt the council would be all for it, if planning laws allowed them to ask for a percentage of affordable housing!!

Non of the above comments appear to answer Mr Sykes query, I will tell you what I know, there were casino's in York back in the 1960s, the 'Society Club' in Bootham, which later became 'Jack and Jills' nightclub, also the '55 Club' in 55, Micklegate owned by N. England, then later to become the '71 Club' and again later to become Ziggy's , and I believe the 'Zarf Club' 11, Stonegate, later to become 'The Old World' was also a gambling joint. The Government of the time changed the gambling rules in England so only City's with a certain population, think it may have been above 150,000 were allowed Casino's, so people who wanted to lose a bit of cash had to go to Leeds. I hope this will help your query.

I am aware that the developers of James House (in James Street) in the early 1990's looked into having a casino on this site, but, licensing was the problem.

More recently, some businessmen were proposing a casino on the Horwell Brothers site off Foss Islands Road, but, think the planning application either failed or was withdrawn, probably due to the licensing issue.

With the increased popularity of poker tournaments, a casino in York would be a big attraction. I know many who go to Leeds and Bradford to play in these tournaments.

Given the number of betting shops and amusement arcades with one armed bandits, there is hardly space for a casino between them. The link between the Church and Casinos seems to be one that exists only in Mr Sykes mind, and that makes me wonder if he should be allowed to gamble at all. In my experience the closer you get to Rome, the greater the number and size of Casinos.
