I WAS concerned to read in the report in The Press of April 7 the suggestion that “major improvements around York’s historic Bars” were included in the council’s strategy as part of its Reinvigorate York facelift programme. It seems they must be dramatically improved.
With apologies for repeating detail from the report, it states that “street surfaces either side of the Bars should be replaced with natural materials to enhance the qualities of the structure, but funding may be a problem”.
Apparently council transport bosses advise that these “improvements” would be very costly. Yes indeed.I fear a repeat of the kind of work carried out on King’s Square. When money is in short supply why are these expensive and controversial schemes even being considered? Surely taxpayers’ money could be better spent?
