Litter disgrace

First published in Letters by

WHERE in the council is there anyone who walks around York and sees the filth on the streets?

In particular, the covered area in Rougier Street is a disgrace.

I have rung the council in the past and reported the sheer filth having witnessed a man urinating (at 11am) and another opening a cigarette packet throwing the wrapping on the floor.

When I challenged the offenders I was rewarded with expletives.

Today, the litter bin at the side of the Royal York hotel was overflowing onto the pavement.

Not the first time filthy York has been reported on this page and not just today either. At the risk of repeating myself, the state of the streets could well be just one reason for York entering the top 5 in the Cr*p Towns guide.
It wasn't always like this.

But according to our dear leaders at the Council when they presented their budget, asking for clean streets is a sign of 'lacking ambition' for our City.

Instead we should spend hundreds of thousands of pounds on Reinvigorate York instead, so that we have nice shiny squares to litter.

Unbelievable!!!

This Council has the wrong priorities and needs to get it's act together!

This does not help.
York and every other council is hit by massive government funding cuts, Some winge about litter, others (in another letter) about the Foss, then there are potholes, litter bins, a long list of shortcomings

We all agree. None of us like it, so we can whinge which does nothing. We can change the council, but that won't work because Tory councils face the same problems
No use suggesting borrowing from other council projects there are legal reasons why we cant take cash from ringfenced projects.

There is no shortcut. The only solution is a change of direction and that means a new central government

I wish to disagree most strongly, I have been in the company of council employee's when they have received a call about litter and they have reacted straight away to address the problem. I have said it before and will again its not the council who makes the mess its the people of york. Perhaps it would be better to try and clean up your own mess.

Its not just litter. Yorks streets are just so dirty im not sure tha they have been properly cleaned in years. Budget wise a man with a power washer must be a small drop in the ocean.
