Think of the route

Published in Letters by

I DO not want to object to the Yorkshire Marathon as I think it is a great day out for many runners and their supporters.

But my heart goes out to the people of Osbaldwick, who for the best part of four hours were cut off from leaving their homes.

I work as a private hire driver and we had to let people down who had booked taxis to go out as they do regularly for lunch with friends because we could not get to their homes as the road were closed.

Also we had to ask one woman who was going to the station for a train to battle her way through the crowds to cross Hull Road to get to the taxi.

So I hope the organisers take this into account when doing the route for this year’s event.

Richard Benson, York.

Wonder whether H&S would allow a temporary footbridge to be built over Hull Road when the marathon is on?

By the time I got to Hull Rd, there was little need of a footbridge to cross it - people who wanted to get across had plenty of opportunity between the runners, most of whom weren't moving very fast by that point and were quite well spread out from each other!

Mind you, some people thought it was a good idea to run across the route in the first couple of miles after the start, with 5000 tightly packed runners bearing down on them!

I did wonder about Osbaldwick and Tang Hall - but isn't it possible to go out the other way towards Heworth?
