Drain on resources
8:04am Monday 31st December 2012 in Letters By Reader's letter
The poor people of Malton and Old Malton who were flooded out of their homes in November 2012 have been suffering the same misery again.
The flood defences have worked, but the drainage system is so old, badly maintained, clogged and generally unfit for purpose, residents have water backing up and coming up into their houses through the floorboards.
Rivers, ditches, drains, sewers, culverts are not dredged and cleared often enough because of “lack of money”, but our Governments will willingly send money to “aid”, foreigners all over the world. It is a scandal.

The scandal is that water was privatised in 1989 despite there being no competition. We were told however that private money would bring the much needed investment.
What happened was that the increased water charges, thanks to another toothless regulator saw some people initially disconnected while executive remuneration (Gordon Jones etc) and share holders divided did very nicely.
Check out the story of Yorkshire Water and their foreign investment that went wrong rather than investing here in Yorkshire. Happy New Year.
