I read with interest the article around City of York’s investment in The Arts Barge Project (ABP).
Art in the city is always transformative, it inspires creativity and innovation. An innovative city drives forward its growth and projects such as the ABP promote this, as well as adding to York’s rich offer for tourists and visitors.
I welcome this investment as a clear commitment to the creative sector, which follows the council’s announcement on a media and cultural centre for York. The ABP is a well regarded creative community hub.
This investment will mean the creation of much needed jobs and support for young and emerging artists. It will mean that a project, which might otherwise have slipped through the funding net, has a future in York.
I also understand that the investment into this venture will be match-funded by the ABP and that the council is protecting its investment share in the barge until the project is complete.
Decisions such as this always split public opinion but we have to remember that among all the cuts, we need a pathway to growth.
