CATS, mice, cricketers and fugitives all took part in a fundraising run in York.

Dozens of pupils from Millthorpe School, in South Bank, donned fancy dress and ran laps of the 1km course along Knavesmire.

The pupils hoped to raise more than £1,000 from the event, which will be used by the School Council.

Mike Bootham, event organiser, said: “They can use the money to run events in school, to invite guest speakers, and to buy things that would make the school better for students – things that wouldn’t necessarily be priorities in today’s financial climate.”

Executive head teacher Steve Smith said the student council would prepare the pupils for life outside school.
