NEARLY 100 dogs and their owners took to York Knavesmire at the weekend at an event aimed at helping older people to keep their pets.

Sunday’s event raised more than £1,000 for the charity Keep Your Pet – which works with the RSPCA in York and Selby and with Age UK to support elderly people to look after their pet if they have to go into hospital or become unwell. Sally Hutchinson, of Age UK, said: “The atmosphere was wonderful. It was such a calm and happy event with relaxed people and relaxed dogs.

“Everyone understands how important pets are to older people and we want to strive for older people to keep their pets for as long as possible.”

The event was organised by the management committee for Keep Your Pet – Keith Martin, Debbie Evans and Ann Petherick.
