TWO specialist cancer nurses are preparing for the challenge of a lifetime to trek along the Great Wall of China in a bid to raise £20,000.

In their day-to-day lives Tracey Goldsbrough, 50, and Jackie Frazer, 53, both work at York Hospital and have become firm friends.

In their spare time they often go walking and now they have decided to step up their efforts considerably by going on an 11-day trek along the Great Wall of China.

A string of fundraising events has already seen them raise a remarkable £15,000 for charities close to their hearts, and they hope to reach a grand total of £20,000 by the time they return from China.

Tracey said: "We both walk and had started walking together at the weekends. We thought we would put the hobby to good use and the Great Wall of China seemed a good idea.

"We're blown away by how much we have raised having started with a target of £6000."

Tracey, a head and neck cancer specialist , is fundraising for the charity Changing Faces, which has supported many of her patients who have a changed appearance due to their treatment.

She said: "Changing Faces have done amazing work with the head and neck cancer patients I look after. They give people practical support in terms of how to cope if they are being stared at and being integrated in society.

"They have made a big difference to people's lives."

Jackie is fundraising for Marie Curie Cancer Care, which provides free nursing care to terminally ill people at home and in hospices, due to being impressed both personally and professionally with the charity's work.

They have raised funds so far by doing bag packing at Sainsbury's, holding a fashion show and a charity ball.
