A KIND-HEARTED volunteer in York has won a national award for her efforts.

Linda Goodwin is one of 67 people from across the UK to win a Halifax Giving Extra Awards after judges heard how she runs the local playgroup in her village, and runs both the charity shop and tombola to raise money for York Against Cancer. Linda also looks after her father who suffers from Alzheimer’s, and is a tireless fundraiser for the Alzheimer’s Society.

Linda said: “I am thrilled to bits to have won this award, and shed a little tear when I found out. I am always part of a team, and what I do would mean nothing without lots of other people giving their time as well.”

Nominated by her son Ben Goodwin, Linda has gone above and beyond for the people in her community. Ben said: “She is a unique person who always gives to others, but never thinks of taking for herself”.

Paul Oxtoby, community ambassador for Halifax bank York, said: “Halifax received thousands of nominations nationwide, so we’re delighted that Linda has won a Halifax Giving Extra Award in York. The work Linda has done for the community is outstanding and deserves the recognition.”

The 67 regional Halifax Giving Extra Award winners will each receive £300 in bonus bond vouchers. The national winner, announced later in February, will receive a further £2,500 in bonus bond vouchers and a £2,500 donation to a good cause of their choice.
