A FUNDRAISER from York has announced a series of new challenges for 2015.

Phil Wiggins, from Acomb, started the Wiggo 4,000 in support of The Alzheimer's Society on the day of his fortieth birthday, with the intention of running, swimming and cycling 4,000 miles.

In one year, he travelled more than 6,000 miles and raised more than £8,000 for the charity, and was named Community Pride Fundraiser Of The Year on the day of his 41st birthday.

While he had intended to take 2015 easy, he has already changed his mind, and has bigger and better ideas for this year, and hopes to raise £10,000 for Martin House Hospice.

Phil said: "It's very early days yet. Whereas last year was all about a full, year-long challenge which took up every single day and every weekend, this year I wanted to do much bigger events - so 24-hour challenges and massive bike rides across the country, that sort of thing.

"I'm also going to try and engage more people with the challenges as well, and organise a few myself so it will be fewer events, but each will be over a much longer time."

Despite earning a break from exercise following a Herculean effort last year, Phil said he heard about Martin House on the radio and decided to do what he could to help the hospice.

He said: "I wasn't going to do anything this year - the 4k was supposed to be a one-off where I got friends and family behind me but I think it's a great cause.

"I want to create events and fundraising efforts that involve the wider community, and so it's not about just me getting friends of friends to donate their hard earned cash as we did last year. I have a few ideas, but until I get things signed off, I can't promote anything yet. Until then, watch this space!"
