THREE women from East Yorkshire are planning to trek through Sri Lankan jungle next year - after first raising £10,000 for a cancer charity.

Louise Wilkinson, Vicki Kress and Clara Challoner-Walker, who all hail from Everingham, near Pocklington, have set off on a major fundraising drive for Marie Curie Cancer Care UK.

They launched it with a Sri Lankan-themed party at Louise's house in the village, at which they cooked three courses of Sri Lankan food, served beer from Sri Lanka and dressed in clothes from the country, and, with support from local businesses, raised £3,551.

Vicki said they had also been individually been raising money, for example by selling jam and organising raffles, which had taken the total raised so far to about £5,000.

Future events included a 'fashion and fizz evening' on October 24 and a black tie event, featuring live music and a silent auction, in a barn in the village in January or February.

Clara said they were personally financing their trek through dense jungle next November.
