AT York High School deputy head boy Luke Franks, is the first student at the school to gain the new grade 9 in maths.

Early indications of results at York High would suggest that in spite of the increased challenge of GCSE examinations in English and maths this year students the school achieved results in line with those in 2016.

Head teacher David Ellis, who is retiring, said: “All of the experts have told us that it is impossible to compare this year’s results but it is reassuring to find that our young people have achieved outcomes which are similar to those last year when our results were much improved. It is particularly encouraging to see that the results in English and maths are in line with our expectations and are similar to last year. Luke is an excellent mathematician who has worked very hard with his teachers to achieve the grade he deserves. We are really pleased for him but we also recognise that there are many other young people who have worked equally hard to achieve their own personal best.”
