A CHOIR from Uganda sang their hearts out during a performance at a York secondary school.

The Abaana New Life Choir were at Archbishop Holgate’s CE School and performed to a packed audience which included the Lord Mayor of York, Cllr Dave Taylor.

The group of about 2O children and their chaperones have been touring the UK to raise funds to support education and orphaned children in Uganda.

Abanna is a Christian based charity working in Africa. The aim of the work is to help break the cycle of poverty through education. The charity has raised over one million pounds to date which has helped to fund 13 new schools, medical projects, supplying water pumps and supporting over 1,300 children.

York Press:

The choir’s performance at the York school raised £1,150 in donations.

Richard Nihill, school chaplain at Archbishop’s, said: “It has been a privilege to work with the choir, welcoming them into our community has had an enriching effect on all the pupils and staff who have met them. Abaana’s vision of justice and compassion for all children echoes our own school values.”

Dr Pugh, school governor, said: “It was a moving experience that will have a lasting effect on my family and myself. I was taken by their strength of faith in God, and the way that the Abaaba live out the gospel in their daily work.’

While at Archbishop Hogate’s the children got to experience some making and baking in design technology sessions, supported by Archbishop’s 6th form student leaders.
