WHEN we sample a caf attached to a garden centre or nursery, it doesn't mean that we are enthusiastic gardeners.

In this case we were responding to suggestions from readers in Dringhouses and Foxwood.

The caf signage is not of the best. The nursery is easy to locate, but initiative is required if you seek refreshment.

It was not yet midday and there were only two vacant tables. Very soon, potential customers were queuing. Had it been warmer perhaps they would have opted to sit outside.

Tables mostly accommodated four people. This meant that although all the tables were in use only about two thirds of the chairs were occupied.

In addition to the standard menu, daily specials were itemised on a board.

The lettering was too small to read from our seats. Ann went to investigate, selecting spring cream chicken and vegetable quiche (£5.95).

This proved to be a winner! Half a freshly-baked quiche, garnished and with chutney. On inquiry this was identified as Old Yorkshire Chutney from Rosebud Preserves at Masham. A jar was duly purchased.

I contemplated a stuffed jacket potato (£4.95 to £5.95) or even an Italian-style panini (£4.95). A reader had urged me to try the roast ham and cheddar with onion marmalade (£4.95). This lived up to the recommendation. Garnished with lettuce, cherry tomatoes, cucumber, carrot, three colours of pepper and coleslaw, what more could I want? Nothing!

This meant we forewent a pudding. Pity because the choice included sticky toffee and summer fruit sherry trifle.

A chilled cabinet contained an array of goodies. I should especially have like to sample the gooseberry and almond tart (£2.25).

Not everyone appeared to be eating something substantial. We saw scones and toasted teacakes (£1.50), tea (£1.60), espresso (£1.25) and cappuccino (£1.95) being served, even at lunchtime.

Wheelchair access appeared good, although entry may be required through a side door. Toilettes (their spelling) were fine.

One drawback. We sat for 20 minutes before our order was taken. Clearly an oversight as apologies were profuse.
