THE hospital is set well back from Bootham and is accessed by a drive bordered by playing fields.

Having entered the hospital, proceed along the corridor. Turn left at the clock and the café is on the left.

I felt the approach was Victorian in style but, once in the café, that feeling disappeared.

There are plenty of tables and on a warm day there would be the opportunity to sit outside.

The café is open on weekdays from 11am to 2pm and a take away service is provided.

There are table menus, but food and drinks are ordered from the servery.

Drinks on offer included tea (70p), coffee and hot chocolate (both 90p) and cakes from 60p to £2.

For a more substantial snack, a jacket potato with one filling and salad garnish cost £1.80. There is also a salad box which includes pasta and rice at £2.30.

I was attracted to the meal deals at £2.50 and £2.80. What was the difference? Deal one provided a bap with one deli filling and salad, crisps or fruit and a drink. The only difference between that and deal two was the special bap.

I opted for deal two, choosing a seeded bap in preference to ciabatta. Fillings included ham, tuna and bacon and there was an excellent variety of salad items.

My selection of a bacon filling with cucumber was a good choice. Together with a packet of crisps and a cup of tea, what more could I ask?

The last remaining piece of carrot cake (£1.75) looked far too tempting. I don’t think that I have eaten such a moist, moreish carrot cake before.

This café serves a useful purpose for hospital visitors, staff, patients and the general public.

For £4.55, I received excellent value in relaxed surroundings, but it was a pity the serviettes were black.

Toilets are conveniently situated near the café. I omitted to ask how wheelchair-users would access the main entrance, as I had climbed three steep steps.
