Winner: York Foodbank
Runners up: Treemendous, Bishophill Community Garden, Village café, Fulford
Four wonderful projects, in a category which truly encourages pride in the community. Our judges were extremely impressed with Treemendous York, which has made York a greener place for generations to come, and the Bishophill Community Garden, a fantastic entry which has helped build a community. The Village Café in Fulford is a great project which relieves loneliness for many.
However, York Foodbank was recognised for being a “wonderful voluntary response to people who have fallen on hard times”. Judges said that while it was sad there should be a need for its help, York Foodbank is a community effort which has pulled together to help others and it encapsulates the whole ethos of the awards.
Caleb Ellwood, manager of the project, said they had so far helped to feed 2,500 people in the York area. “When people think of foodbanks they think of people who need ongoing help. We help people out in a crisis. It’s very much needed.”
