SHOPPERS in York have even more choice after a new home accessories and gift shop opened its doors – creating two jobs in the city.

Bespoke Country, which already has outlets in Scarborough and Whitby, has chosen Castlegate, in York, for its third shop.

Customers have a wide selection of home accessories to choose from, ranging from pottery to fabrics, candles, rugs and cushions.

Joint director Victoria Clark said the recession had actually helped them with their expansion plans.

“We probably wouldn’t have been able to afford the rent at any other time,” she said.

“We saw the opportunity and we took it.”

She said trade had gone very well in the first few days and she was confident the business could ride out the credit crunch.

“We are really careful with what we buy and we give really good customer service,” she said.

“We offer a bespoke service and we import things from America as well, from companies that sometimes nobody else has got.

“One customer said we have beautiful things at affordable prices and that’s exactly what we aim to offer.”

Andrew Hedley, of Blacks Property Consultants, which arranged the lease, said: “We are getting there, knocking these empty shops off one by one. The interest is there, which is encouraging, and hopefully shops like Bespoke Country will satisfy those who feel the city was becoming all fashion related.”
