PLAYFORD Ros, the North Yorkshire wine supplier, has been bought out of administration by its former rival, Hull-based House of Townend, saving six jobs.

Under its new owners Playford Ros, which went into administration last summer, will continue to supply fine wines to its prestigious corporate and private clients out of its base at Sowerby, near Thirsk.

John Charles Townend, fourth generation managing director of the 104-year-old House of Townend, said: “The acquisition of Playford Ros is part of a long-term growth strategy for House of Townend.

“It is a good fit for us. Before running into problems Playford Ros had established a name in North Yorkshire as a vintner of quality and judgement.

“By taking it over, House of Townend will only enhance our long-established reputation as the wine merchants of choice for discerning customers.”

House of Townend now supplies some of the leading hotels and restaurants across the Midlands and the North, including the Star Inn, at Harome; The Drunken Duck in Ambleside; Stapleford Park in Leicestershire; and Jesmond Dene House Hotel, Newcastle.

The company, which employs 50 people, also manages wine portfolios for more than 300 private clients and supplies direct to hundreds more individual customers.
