A FLEDGLING East Yorkshire business has been shortlisted for a national ICT award.

Respect Our Wishes, of Market Weighton, has been invited to present its nomination for the Best use of Information Technology in patient and citizen involvement in the healthcare category for the 2009 E-Health Insider Awards.

Respect Our Wishes, the first online national register of Living Wills, was established in April by GP Maria McDiarmid and former NHS manager Mandy Thomlinson after relatives experienced distressing end of life care.

A living will is a document declaring your wishes regarding your future health care and is recommended by many charities including Alzheimer’s Society, Age Concern and Marie Curie.

Registering your living will or “do not attempt resuscitation” directive ensures that you and your family, friends, clinicians or carers know exactly where to find vital end of life care information when needed.

Mandy, the chief executive, said: “As our register is internet based, entering the competition seemed a good way to share with other healthcare professionals the benefits of living wills and to raise the profile of Respect Our Wishes. “We’re delighted that we’ve got this far, but will have to wait until the awards dinner on October 20 to find out whether we’ve won.”
