A NEW Orange store has opened in Coney Street, York, creating eight jobs. It is expected to be among the telecommunication company’s top 20 performing stores in the UK.

Staff were quick to note that the heritage listed building which is their new home always had a history of communications. In the 1870s, the premises was a lithography business owned by Francis Monkhouse.

Savouring the history, store manager Diane Hunter, pointed out how lithography had transferred text to newspapers, magazines and posters, while today’s mobile phones were also used to transfer text.

“It is also quite incredible how mobile phones and music have morphed together in recent times.”

The new store will tap into an estimated 221,000 potential mobile phone customers in the region and is one of 60 new stores planned for this year, with the refurbishment of 100 more.
