A FUND set up encourage jobseekers to launch their own businesses has seen more than 11,500 ventures set up in Yorkshire and Humberside.

A total of 11,590 people have opened a business in the region with the support of the New Enterprise Allowance (NEA), a fund available to jobseekers with a business idea.

In York the figure stands at 200, which was topped by both Harrogate and Hambleton local authority areas, which reported 470 and 270 new businesses respectively.

In Ryedale NEA funded 70 new enterprises alongside 150 in Selby.

Successful applicants get access to a business mentor, financial support for up to six months and may be able to apply for a loan of up to £25,000 to help with start-up costs.

Minster for employment Damian Hinds said: “As these latest figures show, thousands of people across Yorkshire & Humberside have great business ideas, and are taking the steps to turn them into a reality.”
