THERE are many ways to appreciate York’s unique views and history.

Visitors to the city can hop on and off sightseeing buses or take a Tuk-tuk around the many attractions, but nothing can quite compare to a new venture recently set up at the back of a pub.

A new York business is now giving tourists the chance to see the city by climbing aboard a canoe and paddling along the River Foss.

York Canoe Hire is based at the back of the Watergate Inn, in Walmgate, and gives people the chance to hire both canoes and kayaks for as little as £5 an hour.

William Hopkinson, business manager of York Canoe Hire, told The Press: “The River Foss is a hidden gem in the heart of York.

“Fun for all the family, paddling along the Foss offers some incredible views of major landmarks including: Clifford’s tower, Rowntrees Wharf and the Castle Museum.

“As well as this, customers frequently witness the abundance of beautiful wildlife and wildflowers that make the Foss so uniquely charming.

“There really is nothing like York Canoe Hire on offer in York.”

Visitors can choose from a Canadian canoe, which has enough space for two adults and two children, or a single-person sit on kayak.

Anyone is welcome to try out the vessels and no experience is required.

Staff will be on-hand to provide all of the equipment and give visitors an induction about safe canoeing, and to show them the basics.
