A GEOLOGY expert is being sought by the owner of Eggborough Quarry near Selby.

Owned by Leeds-based Mone Brothers since 2011, the 45 acre sandstone quarry that serves trade and domestic customers from across the region boasts a number of geological features that require explanation.

Mone Brothers director Phil Mone, who has also recently unearthed an iron axe at the site, said: "The excavations at the quarry have revealed some intriguing sedimentary layers and features that give some clues as to the topography of the area thousands of years ago.

"We suspect there are several ancient river beds running through the quarry but we’re not geologists. I’d love to meet with an expert that could explain some of the geological features we have here.

"While we are a commercial business, we’re also very mindful of our surroundings and the way we are working in an environment that is many millions of years old.

“We have no idea as to its history. It could be 50 years old or 500 years old. Maybe there is a local history expert that could shed light on the find?"

Mone Brothers was founded in 1965 by brothers Phil (senior), James and John Mone and specialised in the maintenance and repair of plant equipment. They are now headquartered in Morley with additional sites at Eggborough near Selby, Bramhope near Otley and New Farnley in Leeds.
