A FAMILY-run printing business dating back to 1905 has passed on to the next generation as Wood Richardson's managing director steps down after 30 years.

After three decades at the helm of the Haxby Road-based business, John Richardson is handing over the reins to his son James, who will become managing director.

Remaining in the business as chairman, John says he has seen "considerable change" as the in-house print and production services business has developed and adapted with changing printing trends and customer requirements over the years

James, who described his father as a "leading light" in the development of the business" and an "enthusiastic mentor", said: "What a great honour to be given the opportunity to take Wood Richardson forward as the incoming managing director.

"My father has been a wonderful example for me to follow and I am proud to take on the responsibility and maintain the values the company has embedded throughout its culture in the future.

"I have gained considerable experience while working out of the business in various sectors and look forward to bringing some of these learnings into the company.

"I'm ready to tackle the challenges of the future head on at Wood Richardson and am keen to continue to invest in the very best of modern print and production machinery while supporting and empowering the long serving team to ensure that Wood Richardson can remain competitive in both today and tomorrow's marketplace."

Having studied a BSc (Hons) Print & Media Management at Leeds Metropolitan University, James' background includes experience in many aspects of print management including offset and digital printing, print on demand and bindery and operations management. During his time already served at Wood Richardson, James has introduced new shift patterns and flexible working to reduce company overheads and improve profitability. He has also implemented and maintained the ISO 9001 standard.

John said: "I am delighted to be welcoming James as new managing director of Wood Richardson. James has a strong printing and production background gained across a variety of printing companies and therefore has the experience and skill set to continue the good work, maintain the credible family name and steer Wood Richardson to the next level."

Based in purpose built facilities in York, Wood Richardson was established in 1905 and has been run by the Richardson family since the 1920s.
