SHOPS across East Yorkshire are to get a tax cut of up to £1,000 over the next two years.

The business rate relief agreed by East Riding of Yorkshire Council will apply to all occupied retail properties in Pocklington, Stamford Bridge, Market Weighton and other areas with a rateable value of £50,000 or less in 2014/15 and 2015/16.

The discretionary scheme was outlined in Chancellor George Osborne’s autumn statement last year. The Government will pay the council the rate relief offered in full.

Businesses which will benefit include shops, opticians, post offices, car showrooms, markets, petrol stations, garden centres and funeral parlours, as well as restaurants, pubs, cafés and coffee shops. The council will decide whether a property qualifies.

Coun Jane Evison said: “I am delighted we are able to implement this scheme, which we estimate will offer much-needed assistance to more than 4,000 businesses.

“I am particularly pleased we will be able to introduce it as early as April.”

The relief will be automatically awarded to businesses which qualify, with no need for application forms.
