York may miss out on ‘assisted’ status

First published in Business news

YORK will miss out on new powers to help business growth if Government proposals go ahead.

Plans for extending “assisted area status” across the Leeds City Region - of which York is part - between 2014 and 2020 would include areas in Bradford, Calderdale, Kirklees and Leeds.

Parts of Selby district already have this status, which provides greater levels of support to existing and relocated businesses.

The proposals, which the Government has said are designed to help “areas of economic opportunity”, do not include York.

A consultation closed last week and the expansion is due to come into force in July.
