ASDA'S shop at Monks Cross, York, which was one of the pioneers of an energy-saving drive within the 313-store supermarket group, is on course to save the equivalent of 62 households' annual energy consumption by the end of the year.

The group has invested £12 million in projects designed to save more than 80 million kWh, enough to power towns the size of Dartford, Hereford or Widnes, saving more than 34,000 tonnes of carbon.

Dean Smith, duty manager at Monks Cross, said: "It wasn't difficult. We have simply been sensible - turning off lights and computers when not needed, closing fridge doors and we are now in the process of installing more energy-efficient lighting."
