A NETWORK of young professionals in York is hoping to win Best Business and Community Link in The Press Business Awards 2012.

Make York was formed in November 2009 as the offspring of York Professionals. It was created by a group of like-minded professionals in the city with the ambition to advance their career and make a difference to the city.

Sarah Valentine, secretary of the network, which is run by volunteers, said the group aims to support young professionals and promote their contribution to the city, as well as promoting the city as an attractive place for young professionals to work.

It also aims to lobby on economic, cultural, environmental and social issues, she said.

"The success of Make York can be linked to the time commitment of its members but also the fluid concept of the committee which is always changing to take into account different industry sectors of the city," said Sarah. "The group is open to any individual who is a young professional either living and/or working in York and surrounding areas. There are no annual membership fees and it is a non-profit making organisation."

The organisation holds a variety of events to appeal to different audiences, including breakfast seminars, evening drinks events, sporting events and this year held its first formal ball. It uses a variety of attractions and new businesses in York to display the facilities York has to its members, as well as expanding members's knowledge of York's economy and culture, said Sarah.
