INVESTING in future talent is important to York creative agency United By Design.

The company, based on The Mount, York, was the first to take part in York St John University ’s Graduate Internship Scheme, taking on design graduate Annabel Eager for a six-month placement, who has since been employed full-time by the company.

Newest recruit Ross Brotherston has also been with the company since graduating, progressing through work experience to full employment.

Owen Turner set the business up in 2008 after ten years in established design agencies in Bristol and Leeds.

He also helps to nurture young entrepreneurs through mentoring school children in Young Enterprise and through York St John Business School’s Acorns programme, which helped him when he founded the business, and by mentoring winners of the university’s SPARK Scholarship for Enterprise.

The business increased turnover by 26 per cent in the last year with clients including security and maintenance company Britsafe, the London-based Advertising Standards Authority (ASA), the National Museum of Scotland as well as many local organisations.

Owen is now hoping to win Small Business Of The Year at The Press Business Awards 2012.
