WHEN Lisa Carlyle bought a 1922 listed building, Watermeadows in Huntington Road, York, she knew she had found her dream destination for her hair and beauty spa.

Over the past three years Kuki Hair & Beauty Salon has grown from four employees based in room in a gym, to 23, and owning its own premises means Lisa, who is a qualified teacher in beauty therapy, can invest more in the business.

She said: “I believe having the right location is paramount to having a successful business.

“I have created a warm friendly atmosphere in a beautiful building with a modern twist,” she said.

Next she is having the gardens recreated into a modern retreat with a wooden lodge, hydra spa and sauna.

“This is far greater expansion than I had originally planned for but there is still room for growth,” she said.

During 2012 and 2013 Lisa, who has also entered the Women in Enterprise category, plans to recruit more hair stylists, receptionists and the business takes on apprentices. She also plans to target new markets, with customers coming from across the country, and pampering becoming a more mainstream activity.
