Winner: Benenden Health

Finalist: Ellis

THE team of nearly 250 staff at York-based mutual healthcare society Benenden Health have seen a busy year with acquisitions, new division launches and financial growth, all of which contributed to it winning the Large Business of the Year title.

Judges said both finalists were well run companies that operate within a culture that is “clearly defined and capable of attracting and retaining quality staff”.

They said both companies put an emphasis on looking after their staff by ensuring an appropriate work/life balance, which has been rewarded by their employees’ efforts and in both firms this has translated into tangible bottom line success.

However, for its “clearly defined vision for the company’s future and the bold steps they have taken to achieve this while still proudly adhering to their mutual society principles”, the judges awarded the title to Benenden Health.

Following the appointment of new chief executive Marc Bell in March last year, Holgate-based Benenden has launched its Benenden Wellbeing division, which has overseen the launch of an independent living product, a health assessment product and travel insurance, as well as acquiring Edinburgh-based insurance brokers, Keegan & Pennykid.

Chief executive Marc Bell said: “We are very proud to be a York-based company and a mutual, and want to thank the judges for awarding us this award.

“A particular thank you also to all our employees who work hard to provide a service for our national organisation, which has won the award for best customer service for the last four years.

“We are very proud of our awards, and of our staff that help us to achieve them.”

The last year has also seen Benenden win planning approval on a £45 million development at its hospital, and launch a national television advertising campaign.
