Please accept our condolences.
I first met Roy when he came to live in Hampshire to race in the late 1950s early 60s. He joined the Test Road Club, a rival club. He could win at everything from track to road races and time trials and he gave us local boys a hard time.
Then he went back to Yorkshire, where amongst other things he put up his long lasting 24 hour record and reached international standards.
Our paths crossed again when he decided to join the RAF as an educator ( I had joined earlier) and he asked me about RAF life. While he was in the RAF we organised a trip to the Isle of Man cycling week with a small RAF team. Roy gave some very good advice to the lads in the team and always had an open ear for their queries.
Much later on, when I was living near Zürich, he came with his wife Barbara to stay at our house during the World Championships at Oerlikon track in 1982. They rode all the way to us and back by tandem.
Roy has always been the type of rider I admired but could never be and was a complete gentleman.
Unfortunately I lost contact with him and it was while trying to look him up to send Christmas greetings that I heard this sad news.
I only have a couple of shots of Roy - one during the Isle of Man visit - mapreading on Snaefell and one half hidden in the field crouched low, which was typical, just before he broke away in an evening road race near Winchester.
If Barbara reads this, please accept our sympathy and wishes. We will think of you on Thursday.

Sad to hear of Roy's death. I have only fond memories of his teaching at Central Grammar in Birmingham. Also being with him and my brother Roy going to timetrials in the early hours of Sunday mornings and his support at the first schoolboy's cyclocross in 1965.
My condolences to his family and hope that they may take comfort in knowing what a great teacher and gentleman Roys was.
