White-hot reception call ahead of York City's play-off semi-final against Fleetwood

York Press: Nigel Worthington Nigel Worthington

NIGEL Worthington wants no nervous tension - on or off the pitch - when his York City team kick off their two-legged play-off semi-final against Fleetwood at Bootham Crescent.

Tomorrow night’s match will be a sell-out for home fans and Worthington is asking the Minstermen faithful to create a cauldron of noise for the live televised clash, kick-off 7.30pm.

He insisted that nobody should feel anxious about the game and, rather, embrace the occasion as the club aim to reach Wembley for a fifth time in as many years.

On this weekend’s first leg, the City chief said: “I don’t think it should be tense and there is no reason why we shouldn’t be confident. We are on a fantastic run of 17 games unbeaten and I am hoping there is a really good atmosphere with lots of noise.

“We had 1,400 fans at Scunthorpe last weekend and it was fantastic. Getting that support behind the players again will be a huge thing in terms of pushing them on.

“We have got two fantastic games going live across the country so there will be a lot of people watching the situation and that’s a fantastic opportunity for the players to embrace, enjoy and to perform in front of. Both teams will be looking to take an advantage into the second game at Fleetwood.

“But, if we don’t get that advantage, we have got to make sure we are still in with a good shout going there.”

Worthington has been impressed with the sight of long queues outside Bootham Crescent all week with some fans arriving just past 5am yesterday morning to guarantee their tickets for next Friday’s second leg at Fleetwood.

On that commitment, the former Norwich and Northern Ireland chief added: “It has just shown that the support is out there. God knows what time some of the first people here got up, so full credit to them.

“I am delighted that we are in the position we are in for them because they deserve it for the support they have given us home and away this season. In return, we will be doing our best to give them a performance that will put us in a good position going to Fleetwood.”

Worthington has also told his players that they will be creating life-long memories if they do make the Wembley final on Monday, May 26.

The City boss played for Sheffield Wednesday in FA and League Cup finals underneath the Twin Towers at the old national stadium and was also in charge of the Norwich City team that played in the 2002 Championship play-off final at the Millennium Stadium in Wales.

“The ultimate aim is promotion but there’s no point talking about that if you don’t get through these two games,” Worthington said of the first prize awaiting his team or Fleetwood. “If we can, then, from my experiences as a player, going to the old Wembley in different cup finals was wonderful.

“I also had the honour of leading Norwich out at Cardiff in the Championship play-off final when Wembley was being rebuilt and the scenes, memories, colours and atmospheres from those occasions never leave you. They truly leave a mark on your mind, so let’s enjoy the next two games and everything else will look after itself then.”

Worthington appears to have one selection dilemma against Fleetwood - which two of Adam Reed, Will Hayhurst and Lewis Montrose to select across his midfield.

“That’s something we will be looking at,” he admitted. “We will see what Fleetwood’s team is and it will be a case of horses for courses again.”

For me the main aspect from tomorrow is to still be in the tie come full time at BC so whilst a win would obviously be great I wouldn't be too concerned if we came away with a draw or even a 1 goal defeat for that matter as I think we are better set up to win away from home as recent results have proved.

Whatever happens we are in massive bonus territory and have nothing to lose IMO. The fact that we should make money from both gate receipts and Sky TV can only help the club and the interest in the club at the moment is fantastic in hopefully getting a real feel good factor and forward momentum ready for next season whatever division we are in.

TBH I still can't quite believe we are in the play-offs and it's a massive credit to all concerned for the results since Jan 1st. I would have happily taken mid-table mediocrity at the start of the season and certainly after the Bury game.

What an atmosphere this promises to be and against a strong Fleetwood team that will have ex-City men Matty Blair, Jon Parkin and Charlie Taylor in their squad, giving it even more of an edge! NW has sounded the clarion call of no faint hearts and nerves(including from the fans), so let's straightaway try to pick up from where we left off in the second-half at Glanford Park last Saturday and seize the initiative by forcing our opponents on to the back foot, get an early goal and making them wobble! For me, it's Adam Reed in the midfield and an interchanging wing pairing of Will Hayhurst and Ryan Brobbel, so as to keep them guessing. All young lads, who can surely give it their all in these play-offs and land their dreams and our hopes, of a trip to Wembley! COYR.

I suspect I will have some nervous tension standing in the Longhurst tomorrow night! Hope we put in a good positive performance and get some advantage to take to Fleetwood. The large City support will benefit us. Does anyone know if away goals count double in the event of a 2 leg draw? A further trip to Wembley will be amazing if we can manage it. Good luck to NW and the squad.

Agreed! For most of us a top half finish would have been a very good season. Being in the play offs still amazing. But we're in it so let's win it! Who knows what next season has in store (Northampton went from play offs to strugglers in one season). Good luck everyone. Enjoy the day.

No..... away goals do not count double. If the scores are level at the end of both gams 30 minutes extra time is played.
If the score are still tied it's penalties !!!!

Like one of the previous posters said not many of us thought that City would be good enough to reach the play-offs. But having got there we have nothing to lose, so lets give it a go. Of course Fleewood are the favourites, but the favourites dont always win do they?. Reed and Hayhurst would be my choice as Montrose is a bit too casual for my liking. I dont really expect City to go at Fleetwood gung-ho, so it could be a very tight first leg tomorrow. As long as we go to Fleetwood at least on level terms, then I will be happy.

Cant tell you how relaxed I feel ahead of tonight's play off tie with Fleetwood when compared to the Conference Play Off Semis v Morecambe, Luton and Mansfield. The team have massively overchieved with a 16 point improvement on 2012-13 so they really do have the right to relax, play their game and see where it takes us.
Yes of course I will be gutted should we miss out on Wembley but for me this bears no comparison with the weight of expectation / desire that surrounded the Conference Semis....and Finals too!
That said did we really work 8 hard years to reclaim a place in the FL to be invited to play West Brom B Team? What was wrong with the old days of the Central League 'oop North' and the Football Combination 'daan Sarth'? - for those like me long enough in the tooth to remember.
Perhaps if they reformed those Leagues, played their home reserve games at 3pm on a Saturday pm at their own stadiums then they wouldn't be in this mess in the first place. But no they'd rather protect their playing surfaces for the a Team and so send out the stiffs to the likes of Hyde FC on a blustery Thursday night.....perhaps had they not chose such a route then they'd not be in this mess in the first place.
Of course like me you might also see a connection between a lack of talent at England level having a wee bit of a link to the fact that nigh on every Premiership team is stacked full of foreign talent...expensive foreign talent at that......and boy aren't some of them good?

I disagree with the comment made above, this person could have watched City play every league game this season where only three points are at stake, but participating in the play offs is a totally different scenario, and if this fellow did not know then he did not know, after all I have not seen any mention of how the play off system works in the reports I have read, nor any mention of exactly how many tickets they have sold for tonights game, only that it is a sell out. To say that someone is a part time supporter because they do not know all the rules is a bit naïve. Any way good luck to York City and all their supporters full time and part time for tonights game.
