YORK is hosting its first Picnic for Peace to promote peace and celebrate diversity and multiculturalism.

Organisers say the family-friendly event is in response to the post-Brexit "negativity" and follows similar events in Lewisham and London.

People are invited to bring picnics, bunting and banners from 11am to 2pm to Millennium Fields, next to the Millennium Bridge on Saturday.

York MP Rachael Maskell said: “It is so important now to come together and demonstrate solidarity with one and other. The rise in hate crime is not acceptable. We must stand together against prejudice and in favour of hope for our society and our collective futures."
