Yellow-painted bikes are saved from ending up on scrap heap

Updated in News

Tour de France fans who have painted bikes yellow to welcome the event to Yorkshire can give them a new lease of life in Africa under a recycling scheme.

Old bikes have been donated to churches, schools, and shops to be given a new look for the Grand Depart and looked likely to end up on the scrap heap.

But a York cycling business has launched a scheme to dispatch the machines to Africa.

Carol Walker, of Shannons Cycle Centre in Boroughbridge Road, explained: "We have collected lots of old bikes from our customers for various churches, schools and shops to be painted yellow.

"But it was on the understanding that they come back to us to be sent on to the charity.

"We would like to open the offer of recycling the bikes to Africa to any one who has painted an old yellow bike to celebrate the grand depart - but will just be throwing it away after the event ."

The bikes can be dropped off at the business after the event. They will be reworked and then shipped to Africa. For more information go to http://www.re-cycle.org/.

They will then probably be sold from Africa on to China for melting down and sent back to us via Ikea as cheap tables and beds.
Bit like all the money sent to dig wells over the last 30 years ?
If it all got to where it was supposed to go there would be a well every
10 yards.
But as we all know the corruption there makes it almost impossible to achieve anything.
Never has any country in history been so beset by disasters paved by good intentions.
My scrap bike will go direct to Clanceys which will cut out the middle man "Africa". I know it will go direct to China preventing the overblown Ray ban wearing, Mercedes Benz driving, overfed ,medal sporting, private jet owning self appointed officials from benefitting from my generosity.

Wait for it , expected any moment now a volley of abuse from Buzz followed by jonothan and a plethora of the usual trolls. My Tanner is on Buz being first.

Thanks Julia,

Whilst Carol Walker, of Shannons Cycle Centre in Boroughbridge Road probably doesnt have the power to do too much regarding African governments and their corruption issues gestures like this can still make a difference to those in need. Good on you Carol

Perhaps MSF shouldn't bother, or the Red Cross / Crescent. Perhaps Water Aid should stop too, and the UN should pack up now. Given all the effort that you think has been for nothing. When were you last in Chad, or Mali, or Burundi by the way? Perhaps you spend your time in South Sudan or the CAR?

Yes there is corruption in Africa, as there is all over the world. Africa, by the way is a continent, not a country, but we'll let that slip, out of generosity.

Aid, and fair trade, changes lives and expectations for those among the weakest and most vulnerable of our fellow humans. Your attitude doesn't.

Well as the article doesn't give a country name I think stating Africa is a fair assumption. All "charities" work as a business.. The sellers down Coney street work on commission... people working for them earn money... how much of our money donated to these charities actually makes it to the end user?? How much of it pays for salaries, events, tv adverts etc….

Look into that and you may get a surprise... its not just bono who doesn’t tell the full story…

I agree with your comment on where money ends up in the UK - some of that undoubtedly comes under the heading of corruption. If you're giving money select your charities carefully, and give direct, not via the Charity Muggers in town.

Here we go again, anyone who says a word against immigration and straight away its racism.
That's how we got into this murky filthy mess, which our politicians seem incapable of addressing . No one dares to stand up and say
"THIS MUST BE WRONG"
As Bob Dylan put it "Times they are a changing" and we had all better get used to it.

I have no need to go to Chad, Mali, or Burundi, South Sudan or The CAR !
They are all coming to me and you.
Our Crazy politicians and the EEC blessing an open door policy upon us have ensured that we will ALL have to get used to that sooner or later.
As for my attitude ? I live in the real world with my eyes WIDE open.
Perhaps you should do the same.
The EEC? It's called the European Union and has been for many years. Do try and keep up.

I too live in the real world and see human beings that need help. Sometimes I see people in York who needs help - maybe they want directions, every now and again I see somebody in distress, I offer them assistance. Your approach seems to be to walk the other way. One day it may well be you seeking help, I hope you find it.

People in some parts of Africa may benefit from some second hand bikes, but you're too bitter to even allow them that.

Volleys of abuse aren't really my thing, I'm not a fan of confrontation or conflict and even if I was why would I give you what you want?
Why would you even want the conflict?
Isn't it funny that you "julia" are actively seeking conflict here? Funny cos Paul Badger Cordock does the same so often. And funny cos so does the hallowed Matthew of this parish.

I'll never understand that mentality.

As for the yellow bikes, I'm loving the sight of them all over town, good effort from all who have taken the effort to brighten things up and get into the swing of things :)
