YORK is today hosting the British Youth Council’s first regional convention of 2014.

Young people elected to local Youth Councils, the UK Youth Parliament, and a host of other youth organisations will take part in the event at City of York Council’s West Offices

The council has given the young delegates use of the meeting rooms in West Offices to facilitate their day’s work and officers will talk about the work of the council, and answer questions from young people.

Other workshops will include learning new skills in speech making, film making, team management, raising funds, making schools ‘incredible and edible’, and how young people can influence politicians and key decision makers.

Katie Ward, chairman of the Youth Voice Yorkshire and Humber Steering Group said: “Young people are expressing their views and campaigning to improve services to young people. This year groups are campaigning on two issues in particular - Improvements to PHSE lessons and other skills for life opportunities, and secondly to lower the voting age from 18 to 16. This is going to be a great day!”
